Getting lost in world-building.
I'm having fun twisting the history of WWII
I have only just read about the 1941 Anglo Soviet Invasion of Iran
Can't think why that cropped up...
I try to remain invisible while on holiday.
This goes down to the level of using local grocery and store bags when shopping.
I declare myself a tourist when ever I try to speak the local language.
I have been told that I give this policeman a run for his money in accent and pronunciation.
As a sort of corollary, I know 2 UK/Irish nationals that have the Irish flag on their backpack even when they are travelling on their UK passports.
For me it states "Yes, I'm a tourist but don't hate me!"
Wearing your national flag as a part of your clothing when abroad.
Outside your native country [where it would be a tad redundant] wearing a national flag screams tourist to me.
And an insecure one at that.
Picking only one from each author/team:
Lord of the Rings [JRR Tolkien]
Night Watch [Terry Pratchett]
The Blessing Way [Tony Hillerman]
Neverwhere [Neil Gaiman]
To Kill a Mockingbird [Harper Lee]
Brave New World [Aldous Huxley]
Man in the High Castle [Philip K Dick]
Maltese Falcon [Dashiell...
For me it is a bit of everything.
I am a visual thinker, so it usually starts with an image that I see or something that comes to me.
Dreams are great for that.
That leads me to either a story idea or setting.
Then I can let my imagination [a little] loose.
I used to dive deep into world...
Never on the scale of what is happening in the Middle East but I have had neighbours that stopped me writing.
For me the answer was to close the windows and darken the room... And a kick-ass set of noise-cancelling headphone with an epic playlist.
And for my personal wellness I took up mediation...
