This is hilarious and amazing and really creative, but do the bandits risk their lives in this scenario? Or does everyone give a half hearted attempt at combat, shake hands, and hand the DID over?
Almost like gollum with the one ring? The longer they deprive themselves of new equipment the more their mental state starts to deteriorate, or the next item that they "lust" after has to be a higher rarity than the last one, kind of like an endlessly upgrading disease of avarice.
