Seduction attempts so bad that it wraps around and becomes adorable....

The idea sounds like it has lots of potential for charm and surprise. Doesn't need to be silly if there's the tension that they are antagonists. There's also the question: if her lame seduction succeeds, then what happens to her? Does she fall if the opponent falls? Seems like stakes and...

    How Planned is Your Plan?

Given the responses, it looks like your issue is more about forward motion and sustained writing than world-building. I also think people world build in many different ways, including adding on ideas in later books in a series. But the plan vs spontaneous writing is an old issue. I love...

    Writing music lyrics?

I'm not a lyricist, but I did work as a composer in musical theater, teaching and writing, for years, and learned a lot about writing lyrics.

    Unwanted, unplanned writing break

Never thought I'd have to be careful about increasing writing time, but thanks for the suggestion! And to know I'm not alone...

    Unwanted, unplanned writing break

I retired with the expectation I could write two or three times more, and then brain fog has me writing only about as much as I always did. people advise I should enjoy retirement give myself a break, but I am frustrated as you are, wanting to write but struggling with limits. Should I honor...

    Character Arc Quandary

I think your instinct to make the noble born character have to do something to gain magic fits right into your class structure for the two characters. I love that the peasant is passive but magic is innate to her, forcing her to be more active with her life. And I like the possible tension...

    Where to post giveaways?

Thanks, Skip. Since I had posted on self-promo forum already and I'm new, I wanted to ask in case it wasn't a good idea to put another promo there. And since I'm offering a free book, I thought maybe there was a separate place for that. I have been looking at other places to give away ARCs...

Acolyte: what did you think of the series?

Just finished the first season of the new Star Wars show. I found it refreshing in some of its narrative content. But I wish it had gone farther for a first season.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever

I read the first set when they first came out and enjoyed them. Couldn't get into the later books, however. Starting a book with a five-ten page recap of previous books is a turn-off to me. In crafting an 11-book series, I challenge myself to give the reader whatever they need to know at the...

    Writing a tense conversation

One specific way to create tension is to have one of the characters very resistant to replying, if at all. That creates great tension for the character who is trying to get them to speak.
