Dystopian Novels

Anyone here a big fan like myself? Gotta hand the award to 1984 for my favorite. Kinda cliche, I know.

I'm not interested in dystopian governments but I do enjoy terrible worlds to live in. In fact, I like it even better when the bad governments are better by comparison to the awful world. I like it when awful things must be done because it is the least awful thing.

George Orwell's 1984 and Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale are certainly interesting and powerful to read and study but like The Portrait of Dorian Gray, they can have a disturbing quality especially as the ending of 1984 in particular is deeply tragic. I tend to prefer series like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings where good ultimately triumphs over evil.

I find dystopian is kind of adjacent to what I prefer most, which is bleak, abandoned, apocalyptic worlds. Often there is a dystopian vibe to it, but sometimes dystopia is too bogged down in the weeds for me to want to be there. Stuff like a European flavor of man just being a cog in a giant bureaucracy is not really a draw to me.
