Greetings Everyone,

I am new here, probably why you're reading this on the intro forums. Anyway, I am an aspiring fantasy writer. I mostly do it as a hobby and to pass the time but hopefully one day get published...as soon as I get over that writers block called "starting the book". I have over 15 years of storyline I've been dying to write down but my downfall is starting it. I can do short stories and the like but when it comes to my epic tales I just find it difficult. As of this moment I have a bunch of short stories and about four epic-length series' I wish to eventually put on paper. Well, thank you for your time and I look forward to reading what you guys put out as well as all the constructive criticism I know is headed my way.

I have a similar problem- I get overwhelmed by plans for epic sagas. Even things that I start as short stories blossom into huge ballads in my mind and I can't keep up. One thing you can do is try to string together a bunch of short stories; Chopin did the musical equivalent of this and didn't do too bad.

As far as writers' block, I think the best thing in this case is to reduce the pressure by starting the book before the start of the book. This helps you develop background so that readers feel like they are dropping into an ongoing world.

Another technique is to start in the middle, and figure out what you want to happen, what kinds of interactions your characters will have, which helps to set up who they will be.

At the start of a book there are many variables to tie down, sometimes you have to pick something and go with it, and build the rest of it around that.

Thank you all for the welcomes. I think I'm going to start posting short stories that take place in the same time and area my largest story arc resides. This way I can get a little practice in as well as give people an insight into my fantasy world. There may be others since I essentially have two large arcs. One is my epic fantasy where I am starting since it has the most lore I can pull from and the other is a post-apocalyptic/steam-punk arc. I have others but they're so new I haven't been able to fully start developing the characters and worlds.
